Cruises to Mexico and the Mexican Riviera

Head south of the border and prepare to learn, dance, swim, and explore

When it comes to cruising, why compromise? A journey to exciting Mexico – winding your way through exotic ports and drifting along its luscious coast – is a journey you'll never forget. Visit exciting urban landscapes. Travel through grassy plains beneath Mayan ruins. Take your taste buds on a tour of traditional Mexican and indigenous cuisine. Mexico is yours to explore.

But beyond the flash and glitter, there's a hidden Mexico to uncover. Scuba dive to reveal scintillating coral reefs and then climb up the side of a volcano. In its museums, you'll discover historical artwork – the inspiring and thought-provoking works of Frida Kahlo and treasure dug up and recovered from the ancient Mayan civilization. You'll find spiced marketplaces selling antique goods, and natural swimming holes lined with dense, green foliage that stretches to the sky. Forget everything you know (or think you know) about Mexico, and re-discover this ancient land.

There are two major ways to explore Mexico by cruise ship. A departure from the West Coast of the United States will send you down to explore the Mexican Riviera, along with its Pacific charm, rugged shoreline, and golden sands. Or instead, depart from the East Coast of the United States to Mexican's eastern shore that's laden with Caribbean-inspired beats and a more relaxed pace of life. Through it all, expect to encounter a diversity of landscapes, beaches, cobblestone streets and charming museums; you'll adventure through some of the most fascinating sights and sounds on the planet.

Eager to get started? Whether you're planning a visit to the Mexican Riviera or wish to travel to Mexico's eastern shoreline, these fantastic cruise lines will take you there.

Popular Mexican Cruise Ports

Glittering beaches, ancient ruins, snorkeling, tropical forests and more – no matter where your cruise ship docks, you'll find plenty to do and see at port! Here are some of Mexico's most common – and most exciting – ports of call.

Cabo San Lucas

Have you ever seen that quintessential tropical picture – you know the one – with a graceful stone archway towering above inviting teal waters? Chances are you've been looking at El Arco (that's "the arch," in English). You can visit this icon of paradise in Cabo San Lucas, along with a collection of tropical splendors. Rub shoulders with the rich and famous – many celebrities have been sighted at the Cabo San Lucas Beach over the years. For a more private experience, visit Lover's Beach, or as the locals call it, Playa del Amor, with swimming and snorkeling opportunities galore.

Just off the beach, take a 30-minute stroll to the town's gallery district, where you can appreciate (and even purchase) beautiful pieces crafted by local artists. Popular shore excursions will have you swimming with sharks (yes, it's safe!), exploring the countryside by camel, taking an ATV tour, and more. Don't miss the fantastic bars and clubs you'll find here: Cabo Wabo Cantina, El Squid Roe, the Nowhere Bar, and the Giggling Marlin, just to name a few.

Mazatlan

Known for simply beautiful weather all year round, this charming port is not to be missed. Mazatlan is an ornate, picture-book styled city, perched on a peninsula at the foot of the rocky Sierra Madre and the Cerra de Neveria. Once off your ship, relax on white-sand beaches beneath oodles of sunshine. There's gorgeous rock formations in addition to and plenty of tackleboxes and poles that mark this as one of the world's best sportfishing spots.

But beyond lies so much more to experience. Visit the Cathedral Basilica & Plaza Revolución; take in (and snap photos of) its Moorish and Gothic architecture. The Pacifico Brewery is a can't-miss locale – founded in 1900 by three German immigrants, the brewery today serves up incredible suds. For swimming without the crowds, check out the beaches on Stone Island, or get the adrenaline pumping with a zipline through the treetops high above. The kids in your party won't want to miss Acuario Mazatlán, which is an incredible aquarium boasting a multitude of aquatic rarities.

Puerto Vallarta

From sleepy beginnings, this port has become an international sensation since the release of "Night of the Iguana" movie starring Richard Burton, which was filmed at this location. You'll want to visit Puerto Vallarta's lavish beaches, take in its sweeping architecture, and visits its many market stalls. There are miles of sunny beaches and shady spots beneath tall palm trees that are perfect places to lay your towel.

If you love tequila (and who doesn't?), you simply must visit the Tequila Hacienda, where you'll witness the fascinating process of the creation of this tasty brew, and sample some of the finest in the world. Go scuba diving, kayaking, or snorkeling off the gorgeous, uninhabited Isla Marietas. Zipline or rappel through the Mexican jungle, then cap off your visit with a once-in-a-lifetime meet and greet with a dolphin!

Ensenada

As Mexico's second most-visited port of call for large cruise lines, Ensenada has a lot to offer. During your visit, look forward to a warm Mediterranean climate and an easy, breezy way of life that you'll soak up as you visit quaint marketplaces.

Guadalupe Valley is a can't-miss destination with its sprawling wineries that number over 100. Walk through the historic cathedral ballroom and saloon of the Riviera del Pacifico – a once-lively casino that had its heyday in the 1930s. Witness La Bufadora – the world's largest marine geyser – spew pressurized water up to 100 feet above sea level along with a thunderous roar. Finish off your stay with a visit to the lovely Ventana al Mar, where you can enjoy a calm stroll through a stunning waterfront promenade.

Cozumel

Forged from the stuff of legends, Cozumel is a unique port that offers beauty along with a fascinating history. Here you'll find ruined Mayan temples towering next to white-sand beaches (feel free to partake of them both). Mayan mythology holds that Cozumel was home to the gods, and after soaking in the serene majesty of the landscape, you may be inclined to agree.

Investigate the ruins, up close and in person, across the ancient sites of Tulum and Coba. And further scratch that adventure-seeking itch with a visit to the ecological/archeological theme park that is X-Caret, where you'll experience underground rivers, a Mexican cultural show, and countless exhibits. The beaches here are as beautiful as they are plentiful: the breathtaking Playa Mia Grand Beach Park, the secluded Passion Island Beach, and the languid Playa del Carmen are sure to impress.

Where are the Departure Ports for Mexican Cruises?

Travelers looking to explore the Mexican Riviera will need to depart from the Pacific Ocean. There are plenty of locales from which to launch your adventure, including:
If you're looking to encounter the tropical side of Mexico, you'll want to explore the Caribbean vibes of its east coast! Here are some ports where you can begin your adventure.

When Is the Best Time to Cruise to Mexico?

Deciding on the best time to cruise to Mexico depends on your travel preferences: whether you dig the high-octane, party vibes of packed beaches and non-stop events, or if you prefer a more serene, tranquil day at Mexico's gorgeous beaches.

If you're looking for action, consider cruising Mexico between October through April. That's when you'll find big crowds, perfect temperatures (think 65 – 70 degrees F), and endlessly sunny days. You'll also catch festivals such as the November Día de Muertos in November and art shows in February.

For more room to stretch out and enjoy, consider hopping onto a cruise ship in April or May. Though you may find attractions to be less crowded, you'll also need to endure elevated temperatures – the weather in Mexico during these two months can get hot and humid, and rain from off-shore hurricanes can pop into existence, right above your favorite beach, at a moment's notice.

Money Tips for Mexico

It's a good idea to exchange money during or prior to your visit to Mexico. Cruisers coming from the United States will want to exchange their dollars into the Mexican peso (MXN). Although you may find some major retailers and resorts will accept American currency, the vast majority of the country will not. In addition, the exchanges fluctuate often, so you may find yourself overpaying should you elect to use your dollars.

You can exchange your currency in many places, but you may find the most affordable exchange rates take place in an airport, bank, or a hotel. You'll also want to keep in mind that – approximately – every $3 to $5 dollars USD equals around 30 to 80 pesos. So rather than panic when you see a meal that costs $100 pesos, you can instead sit back, secure in the knowledge that you've found a bargain.

Debit Cards and Credit Cards: Though Mexico has a history with being a cash-only environment, much of that is changing. Many large shopping centers and hotels now accept credit cards (including United-States issued cards, albeit with a foreign transaction fee attached) to purchase goods and services. If you're looking to buy from a local restaurant or an outdoor artesian, however, please keep in mind that cash – those pesos that you exchanged your dollars for, remember? – will absolutely be necessary.
